The Department is pleased to announce that Charles L. Briggs, Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology and the Alan Dundes Distinguished Professor of Folklore, has been awarded the 2015 Cultural Horizons Prize, for the best article appearing in Cultural Anthropology during the preceding year. Professor Briggs’ article, “Dear Dr. Freud,” engages with Freud’s 1917 work, “Mourning and Melancholia,” with the goal of thinking through the grief Briggs witnessed in the wake of a mysterious epidemic in the Delta Amacuro rain forest of Venezuela in 2008. The Society for Cultural Anthropology Board and the 2015 Jury chose Briggs’ article for its “creativity, rich and committed use of ethnography, and the striking connections between theory, method and writing style.”

Please join us in congratulating Professor Briggs!
