UNDERGRADUATE PRIZES
Two undergraduate prizes are awarded annually at commencement. Students who submit for the prizes must attend the ceremony; awards are NOT granted in absentia.
The McCown Prize ($1500) is awarded to the graduating senior judged to be the most outstanding Anthropology student in the class--someone that is BOTH an amazing student, and who has been actively engaged in the Anthropology community and ideally the community at large. Evidence of distinction in work done outside the Department may be taken into account, but McCown is primarily to reward for excellence in the work of the department.
Applicants must have a minimum 3.6 GPA in their major course work, and a minimum overall UC GPA of 3.5. To apply, students must submit two letters of recommendation from faculty, two papers written for upper-division Anthropology courses, a resume/CV, and an essay of no more than 1 page. In the resume and in the essay, candidates are encouraged to describe any accomplishment or activities that lend distinction to their application. Though completion of a senior honors thesis is not a requirement to apply for McCown, this award has historically been bestowed on a student who did; completing original and independent scholarly research receives the very highest consideration.
The Kroeber Prize: ($1000) is awarded annually for the outstanding Anthropology Senior Honors Thesis.
The deadline to submit Kroeber and McCown prize material (for 2008) is Friday, May 2nd at noon. Late submissions can not be considered.
Questions about the prizes should be directed to Mary Howell.
