Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology
(The Joint UCB/UCSF Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology)
UCSF Medical Anthropology Program
Historically, the medical anthropology program at UC Berkeley and UC San
Francisco were joined by a common set of training objectives. Over the
years the foci of each program became increasingly distinct and resulted
in greater autonomy for each program while allowing for a continued free
flow of ideas, advising, and teaching between the two sides. The joint
program today is extremely flexible, allowing for the individual needs
and interests of each student.
Students in the Berkeley program are encouraged to explore course offerings
and to work with faculty in the sister medical anthropology program at
UCSF where critical, theoretical training benefits from the intellectual,
political and practical challenges of being located in the heart of one
of the most high tech-oriented medical schools in the United States. Students
of both cohorts come together for the core courses (2l5 and 240) and take
additional seminars together as these reflect student interests on either
side of the Bay. It is expected that at least one faculty member from
each side of the program will serve on the students' Ph.D. qualifying
exams.
