Advisors

Faculty Advisors
Each graduate student will have a faculty advisor(s) throughout his or her career in the Department. The student, with the advisor(s), formulates an overall study plan, selects the most appropriate courses and use of time for each new semester, and determines the student's language requirement(s). The program is designed to be flexible. Students will be assigned one or more advisors upon admission, but these can be changed as the student's program of study develops.

The Head Graduate Advisor
The Head Graduate Advisor (The Vice Chair for Graduate Studies) represents the interests of graduate students to the Department and to the Dean of the Graduate Division. The Head Graduate Advisor, in consultation with the faculty, assigns each incoming student to the faculty member(s) whose interests correspond most closely with those of the student and oversees any changes that become necessary in the assignment of faculty advisors. In addition to this, the Head Graduate Advisor oversees the admission process, orals committee, departmental recommendations for fellowships and teaching assistantships, the composition of Ph.D. qualifying and dissertation committees, the mid-year and end-of-year graduate evaluation procedures, departmental language examinations, the awarding of degrees, and is generally responsible for managing the graduate program. The Head Graduate Advisor is assisted in this capacity by the Graduate Committee, which may consist of one member from each of the subdisciplines and a member from Medical Anthropology.

The current Head Graduate Advisor is Professor Stefania Pandolfo. The co-advisor for Archaeology is Professor Kent Lightfoot.

The Graduate Student Affairs Officer
The Graduate Student Affairs Officer (SAO) maintains departmental records concerning the graduate program and acts with the Graduate Advisor as a liaison between students and faculty, and between students and the Graduate Division. Students entering the Anthropology program come to the Graduate Office for information about orientation and every semester thereafter check with the Graduate SAO in order to keep their records current.
