Advice for Anthropology majors who plan to participate in a study abroad program.

• The Anthropology department will allow a maximum of 4 upper-division, letter graded courses taken at other institutions to be used toward major requirements; a maximum of 1 for the minor.

No department at Cal can guarantee before departure that a particular course taken abroad will fulfill a major requirement. The determination can only be made upon your return to Cal , and only if you provide sufficient information to make the determination.

A course description alone is never sufficient for evaluation. Faculty reviewers need evidence that the courses you took elsewhere were taught at the academic level of Cal ’s Anthropology classes. To make that determination they need to know what you read, what was covered, and what you were required to do. Thus, it is imperative that you bring back to Cal course descriptions, syllabi, reading lists and all work your did for your courses (papers, projects, exams, etc.).

When you return to Cal after your study abroad program, submit a “Course Substitution” form for each class you want evaluated for use as a major requirement. Forms are available outside 209 Kroeber.)You must attach a course syllabus and reading list to each form. Submit the forms and all relevant documentation to the undergraduate adviser (Mary Howell) in 209 Kroeber. Forms are evaluated by faculty (not Mary) in batches; allow up to 30 days for review. (Note: Evaluations rarely happen during summer months.)

• Before you leave, visit 209 Kroeber and get Mary’s business card to take with you.

• When it’s Tele-BEARS time for your returning semester, send Mary an email with a list of the specific classes you plan to register for in the upcoming semester (use the online schedule of classes). She’ll e-mail you back with your advisor code. If you anticipate that you’ll have difficulties with internet access while abroad, leave written permission with Mary to release your advisor code to an "agent" who can do Tele-BEARS for you if you are unable to do so yourself.

• If you are participating in a non-UC sponsored study abroad program, you will need to submit an application for readmission to return to Cal. Be sure you submit it well before the posted deadline. (Details at http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/collegepolicies/withdrawal.html)

• If you plan to look for an honor thesis research project while studying abroad, talk to a potential faculty thesis advisor before you leave.
•If you think you’ve found a potential Honor Thesis research project while doing study abroad, keep detailed field notes.
• Keep a personal journal! You’ll need it when you’re back in Berkeley trying to recreate the experience, and you’ll enjoy having it long after you graduate.
