This course covers key works and authors in the history of Chicana/o Folklore Studies, an interdisciplinary tradition that bridges sociocultural anthropology and literary studies. Of particular interest will be contemporary transformations of historical forms and practices once clearly delineated as “folkloric” (e.g. corridos) but that have merged into the realm of mass-mediated popular culture (e.g. narcocorridos).
