Session A

What is suffering? What claim does it make, and how can (and do) sufferers and spectators respond? Through close readings of ethnography, social theory, theology, newsmedia, film, and short fiction, this course explores different kinds of affliction, exposure, and predation that together we call suffering -- as well as some of the different ways people explain, bear witness to, and critique it.
