Title Of The Research Project:
Mass Media And Processes Of Health/Disease/Healthcare

The case of print media in Mexico

Español

This research project was inaugurated following an invitation by Dr. Charles Briggs to conduct research that would complement a project that was being developed by a team directed by Dr. Briggs of the University of California, Berkeley and Dr. Daniel Hallin of the University of California, San Diego. Based on this invitation we were able to develop a close working relationship which we consider to be quite satisfactory, at least for the Mexican team.

The principal objective of our study was to describe and analyze processes of health/disease/healthcare (processes of h/d/h) reported by print media in Mexico with national circulation, locating the principal themes and social representations that the press provides us with respect to these processes. We also tried to observe which models of attention to disease are presented in the newspapers, information which they underline, repeat, render opaque, or omit, such as the following:

Who are the principal social actors who appear in the press?
What are the 'voices' that speak, and which appear to be excluded or marginalized by the newspapers?

In short, we are trying to establish which are -- according to the print media -- the social representations with respect to processes of h/d/h that are used by the different social actors, and their possible meanings and significance.
